Islands

The islands of the Philippines are formed by volcanoes and form part of a mountain range that occurs primarily underwater. Inside most islands are very steep mountains with dense rainforests, and due to frequent rainfall, there are many rivers, streams and waterfalls that constantly flow down the mountain slopes. Due to the dense mountain rainforests and frequent rains, the Philippines is blessed with spectacular landscapes of the islands, rainforests, majestic waterfalls, beautiful caves and rock formations. Unfortunately, many of the rainforests disappeared before the arrival of the Spaniards in 1500, and more than 90% of the Philippine islands were covered with rainforest. To date, the country has lost about one-third of the rainforest. Rainforests were used and logged for their timber and for clearing land for farms and homes.
